The Department of Social Development announced that recipients of the COVID-19 Social Relief of Distress (SRD) grant must reapply for the assistance as it will now be paid out under a new legislative framework.

NEW REGULATORY FRAMEWORK FOR SASSA R350 GRANT

This comes after President Cyril Ramaphosa extended the SASSA R350 grant by a further year until March 2023 in his State of the Nation Address (SONA) in February.

Ramaphosa said the grant was being extended “to ensure no person in his country has to endure the pain and indignity of hunger.”

The National State of Disaster, which facilitated the SRD grant, came to an end in April 2022. However, the Department of Social Development has been working on a regulatory framework for the payment of the grant since Ramaphosa announced the extension.

“The Department put out regulations for public comment in February 2022 and has now concluded the process.

“The final steps such as obtaining the required concurrence and certification from the relevant Departments has now been concluded, and the Minister of Social Development has published the regulation through proclamation in the government gazette, notice 2042 of 2022 on Friday 22 April 2022,” said the Department.

APPLICATIONS OPEN FROM 23 APRIL

The SASSA R350 grant’s new legislative framework has additional qualifying and assessment criteria, which is why recipients have to reapply if they’ve previously received assistance.

“Fortunately, the entire application system remains a purely digital process, thereby enabling quick access and turnaround times,” said the department.

Applications open at 12:00 on Saturday, 23 April.

Applications can be made via the SASSA SRD website – https://srd.sassa.gov.za.

Further application channels will be made available in due course.

The department said applicants will be considered for the SASSA R350 grant from the month in which the application is made and it will be validated every month.

“This means that all applications lodged in April will be considered as from April 2022.”
