The South African Social Security Agency (SASSA) released a list of reasons for why a R350 grant beneficiary’s application may have been declined, on Monday, 5 September.

SASSA OFFERS REASONS FOR REJECTED APPLICATIONS

In August, the income threshold for the R350 grant was raised to R624 – the food poverty line. This was a significant change as it allowed more people to qualify for the social assistance.

“SASSA welcomes this new development, and the agency is hopeful that a greater number of qualifying applicants will now have access to this grant; already at the beginning of August 2022 SASSA had received just under 12 million applications,” said the agency in a statement on 25 August.

However, many applicants are still being declined. The agency released the following list of reasons for why that may be the case.

Decline ReasonMeaning
Alternative income source identifiedThe client had an inflow of cash into their bank account, which exceeded the income threshold for the period during which they applied. It was R595 from August 2021 until March 2022; R350 from April 2022 to July 2022 and it will be R624 from August 2022 until the R350 grant expires in March 2023.
Identity verification failedThe applicant’s personal details did not match the information received from the Department of Home Affairs.
Existing SASSA grantThe applicant received another social grant during the application period.
DebtorThe applicant was paid R350 in a month (or more) in which they did not qualify. SASSA said the money will be withheld to correct the error and all the unqualified payments are recovered. “If the client still qualifies, once all outstanding R350’s were recovered” payment will resume.
NSFAS registeredThe applicant received funding from NSFAS during the application period.
UIF registeredThe applicant received a payout or was registered with the UIF during the application period.
Government payroll registeredThe applicant was employed by the government during the application period.
Age outside rangeIf applicants are older than 60 or younger than 18 they will not qualify.
Deceased Record at Home AffairsThe applicant was registered as deceased on the Home Affairs database during the application period.
