From 9 May until 31 May is the dates that beneficiaries of the R350 social relief of distress grant will be paid. The first few days of May are reserved for South African Social Security Agency’s (SASSA) payments for old age, child and disability grants.

How and where can I withdraw my payment?

Beneficiaries can make their way to Checkers, Usave, OK Foods, Pick n Pay, Shoprite or Boxer supermarkets to withdraw their payments.

In terms of phone numbers, SASSA allows up to five people to apply for the grant from one phone number. In this case, the grant can only be accessed through your nearest South African Post Office.

If one person applied from a given number, they are able to withdraw their money from one of the aforementioned supermarkets. The supermarkets will require a phone number in order to verify the beneficiary’s details.

Beneficiaries urged to collect on the right date

The SA Post Office has urged beneficiaries to collect their grants on stipulated dates. The dates are in line with the ID number system. This system determines payment dates in accordance with the last three digits of the beneficiary’s identity numbers.

Beneficiaries concerned over new R350 SRD grant criteria

The National State of Disaster, which facilitated the SRD grant, came to an end in April 2022. However, the Department of Social Development has been working on a regulatory framework for the payment of the grant since Ramaphosa announced the extension.

Social Development Minister, Lindiwe Zulu gazetted the new regulations on 22 April, a day before the application process reopened.

All beneficiaries of the R350 SRD rant are required to re-apply and the criteria is tighter than before. Many social justice groups and unions feel that the new regulations will leave the poor poorer. Read the full story here.
