Hundreds of refugees have been left without legal documentation, leading to violent clashes with Cape Town Metro cops.

The department has yet again postponed a decision that would allow hundreds of refugees — most of whom are from the DRC — to renew documentation that they initially obtained elsewhere in SA.

When the asylum seekers heard that many of them might have to go back to as far afield as Limpopo to reapply for their permits, all hell broke out.

The police opened fire with rubber bullets and quickly brought the asylum-seekers – who were vandalising property around the foreshore — under control.
