SAPS K9 unit nabs four hijackers in Gqeberha

Police followed the car around before nabbing the four men inside. A good job by the SAPS! The men may be linked to a hijacking syndicate.

Us South Africans are so used to hearing about crime, we’re often almost left surprised to hear when Police (SAPS) actually make a breakthrough. This week, police in Gqeberha managed to arrest four alleged highjackers soon after a vehicle was stolen.

Alleged hijackers arrested by SAPS

The Uitenhage SAPS K9 Unit was patrolling in Rhalo Street, KwaMagxaki on Thursday night, when it spotted a white Ford Ikon. Officers began following the car as they suspected it may have been hijacked earlier that day in New Brighton.

While following the vehicle, members of the unit ran the numberplate through SAPS systems. As the vehicle pulled into a petrol station, officers received confirmation that the vehicle had been hijacked.

They wasted no time moving in. Four male occupants were arrested on charges of hijacking. They are between 18 and 29 years old.

Woman and her two children targetted

The SAPS say there is a possibility that the four arrested men are part of other hijackings in the Nelson Mandela Bay area.

“It is reported that the complainant, a 47-year-old female and her two children were travelling at 17:05 with their Ford Ikon in Kwaza Street, searching for a specific house, when she was approached by unknown males.  One of the males forcefully opened her driver’s door and ordered her and her children to get out of the vehicle.  The suspects also threatened the complainant and assaulted her as she was hesitant to get out of the vehicle. The suspects then took her keys and drove off with the vehicle.”

The four suspects will appear in the New Brighton Magistrates’ Court on Monday the 23rd of May.
