Crime stats: Over 10 000 RAPED in the first three months of 2023
Even though over 10 000 people were raped in January – March 2023, the number shows a decline compared to the same period in 2022.

Police Minister Bheki Cele has revealed that over 10 000 people were raped in the first three months of 2023.
Cele revealed this as he presented the crime stats for the first quarter on Tuesday, 30 May.
10 000 RAPED BETWEEN JANUARY AND MARCH 2023
According to the minister, reported rape cases have shown decreases in the period of reporting, with six provinces reporting less rape cases.
In January – March 2022, 10 818 rape cases were reported.

Cele said the declines in rape cases are attributed to among other things, the SAPS up-scaling its operations to trace GBV perpetrators, arresting serial sex offenders and rapists and ongoing Men dialogues with communities.
“It remains concerning that 10 512 people were raped in the first three months of this year. A total of 4 768 of the rape incidents took place at the home of the victim or at the home of the perpetrator,” he said.

Cele said the declines and improvements in some crime categories are welcomed but should never be interpreted as victories.
