Taxi driver arrested after being caught with R750k worth of cannabis

A taxi driver was arrested and charged after a sting operation resulted in SAPS finding 500kgs of dagga in his vehicle.

The South African Police Services (SAPS) in Mpumalanga arrested a taxi driver recently. The minibus driver was found in possession of 14 bags of cannabis worth around R750,000. 

Sting operation results in arrest of taxi driver

The SAPS Provincial Commissioner in Mpumalanga Lieutenant General Semakaleng Dapheny Manamela applauded SAPS members. Manamela commended the vigilance and alertness of members who were able to find the enormous amount of dagga in the 14 bags.

The taxi driver was allegedly transporting the cannabis on the N4 road. The 42-year-old driver of the taxi was arrested on Saturday, 9 April, at 10:35. The SAPS report revealed that members were conducting a sting operation on the N4 road.

This was about 5km from the Malelane CBD. A white Toyota Quantum emerged with one occupant (the driver). After it was spotted, it was stopped by SAPS members. During a search of the taxi, SAPS discovered the 14 bags of dagga.

The total weight of the bags being transported by the taxi driver is said to be around 500kg. The street value is estimated to be about R750,000. The driver was arrested and charged with dealing in cannabis.

He is expected to appear before the Nkomazi Magistrate’s Court on Monday, 11 April, facing charges of dealing in dagga.

North West: Suspects due in court for livestock theft

In more news making headlines, the South African Police Service (SAPS) in the North West has confirmed that two men will be making an appearance at the Molopo Magistrates’ Court in Mmabatho on Monday, 11 April 2022, on charges of stock theft and unlawful possession of firearm.

The suspects, aged 35 and 35, stole cattle to the tune of R100 000, which was soon recovered.  In another incident, two suspects aged 30 and 43 were also arrested for livestock theft in Mogwase, Rustenburg, thanks to a successful intelligence-driven operation. 

They searched two houses on Saturday, 9 April 2022, which lead to the arrests of the pair. They then seized a stolen meat cutter machine (stolen in February 2022 from a local butchery) as well as a rifle and three slaughtered cows. Read the full story here.
