Sani Pass crash leaves two people dead

The driver reportedly lost control of the vehicle at a sharp bend in the Sani Pass road near the Kwapitela turnoff on Monday.

Two people were killed in a motor vehicle crash along the Sani Pass Road in Himeville, KwaZulu-Natal (KZN) on Monday morning, 1 August.

TWO DIE IN SANI PASS CAR ACCIDENT

According to Underberg Emergency Medical Services, the accident took place near the Kwapitela turnoff along the Sani Pass Road at approximately 6:50.

The motor vehicle reportedly lost control at a sharp bend and veered off the road. It rolled and landed on its roof in a drain.

“UEMS paramedics found that two occupants were severely entrapped in the vehicle and could only access the occupants through the boot,” said a spokesperson.

When paramedics reached the occupants, they showed no signs of life and were declared dead at the scene.

The matter is under investigation by the relevant authorities.

In an unrelated incident, five children – aged between 10 and 18 – were killed in an accident involving a truck and a car on the R721 road in Vredefort, Free State.

Netcare911 spokesperson, Shawn Herbst, said the driver of the vehicle, which was transporting the children, pulled to the side of the road to relieve himself on Sunday night before a truck crashed into the back of the vehicle.

“The male driver of the car did not sustain any injuries, and the driver of the truck was not found on the scene,” said Herbst.
