Dante Kade Liang, the 18-year-old man accused of stabbing King Edward VII pupil Hlompho Mbetse, 17, to death outside a Sandton nightclub, was granted bail by the Alexandra Magistrate’s Court on Tuesday, 15 February.

SANDTON SUSPECT GRANTED BAIL

The court granted the accused bail of R3000 and ordered him to deactivate all social media platforms, including WhatsApp. The witnesses in the matter are known to Liang and he is to have no contact with them.

He was also ordered to hand in his passport and may not leave Gauteng without informing the investigating officer.

The State did not oppose the bail application. Magistrate Rennie Boshoff postponed the matter to 22 April.

Liang was meant to make his bail application court on Monday but his lawyer was late for proceedings and the matter was delayed by a day. Boshoff did not allow the accused to be photographed on Monday but granted permission on Tuesday.

“These are quite severe charges and I have no reason to not grant this application,” he said.

As previously reported, Liang allegedly killed Mbetse, a grade 11 learner, outside the Madison Avenue nightclub in Rivonia, Sandton on 5 February.

The police said witnesses pointed out the accused to officers when they arrived at the scene and he was arrested and charged with murder.

“The motive of the murder cannot be confirmed at this stage as investigations are underway,” said the Gauteng police spokesperson Lieutenant-Colonel Mavela Masondo, at the time.
