The Gauteng police arrested a 39-year-old suspect in connection with a jewellery warehouse robbery on Monday, 25 July, nearly three years after the alleged crime was committed.

ALLEGED JEWELLERY THIEF BUSTED

Directorate for Priority Crimes Investigation (Hawks) spokesperson Warrant Officer Bonnie Nxumalo said the jewellery warehouse in Ballyclare Drive, Sandton was hit by armed robbers on the night of 9 August 2019.

The suspects allegedly tied up the security officers on guard with cable ties and made their way into the warehouse.

“They stole jewellery worth more than R26 million and fled the scene in their getaway vehicle. A case of business robbery was reported at the Sandton police station,” said Nxumalo.

The Hawks’ Serious Organised Crime Investigation Unit in Germiston eventually took over the investigation, which led them to Soweto on Monday where Mduduzi Nxumalo was arrested.

The accused appeared before the Randburg Magistrate’s Court on Tuesday, 26 July, charged with business robbery. He was remanded in custody until 1 August when he is expected to make a formal bail application.

The Hawks spokesperson said the arrest of other suspects is a possibility.
