Samsung has taken its low-light photography to the next level with its latest flagship device the Galaxy S22 Ultra, which is packed with revolutionary Nightography features that ensure you get the shot – even in the dark.

SPECTACULAR NIGHT LIGHTS WITH S22 ULTRA

We took the Samsung Galaxy S22 Ultra up to Signal Hill Road for a view of Cape Town from above. With the device’s Nightography capabilities we could capture the city’s lights all the way to the horizon without a flare in sight, while the video shot with the phone was buttery smooth – even in the windy conditions the Mother City is known for.

Have a look at the results below:

HOW NIGHTOGRAPHY WORKS

Nightography is of Samsung’s own coinage – it perfectly encapsulates how the Galaxy S22 Ultra’s hardware and software combine to capture amazing nighttime photographs.

The S22 Ultra comes with a quad camera that may seem familiar to the eye but under the hood, its 108MP main camera comes with a sensor that is 23% larger than its predecessor, which lets in more light and draws out the details.

The main camera’s lens is also now coated with an anti-reflective layer that eliminates lens flares or ghosting, which often plague photos taken near lights in the dark. The effect is caused by light reflecting in the lens – Samsung refers to the coating as a “super clean lens.”

In terms of the software, the S22 Ultra utilises Night Solution, which optimises photographs by taking multiple shots – after hitting the shutter once – and combining them into a single exposure that represents the best rendition of the scene with little to no image noise.

Night Solution automatically kicks in when shooting in auto mode if the phone detects that you are taking low-light photographs. The software solution works with the main camera, 3x telephoto lens and selfie camera – the ultrawide and 10x telephoto lenses are excluded.

However, to ensure you are getting the best possible shot in the dark – activate Night Mode by swiping to “More” on your camera app and tapping “Night.”

When using Night Mode, the camera will use slower shutter speeds, therefore it is important to keep the device as steady as possible as the camera needs to take in as much light as possible and any small movements can lead to motion blur.

To really take your Nightography to the next level – and take even longer exposures – invest in a tripod. Using a remote shutter like the Galaxy S Pen Pro would also help to avoid camera shake when hitting the shutter button.

SAMSUNG GALAXY S22 ULTRA SHOOTS SMOOTH VIDEO IN LOW LIGHT

The S22 Ultra has improved on Samsung’s low-light video capabilities too. Motion blur is also the bane of lowlight recording.

The camera has to record at a lower frame rate to take in as much light as possible – if the user has shaky hands this can lead to blurry recordings. To counter this, the S22 Ultra comes with dual-track image stabilisation, which combines Optical Image Stabilisation (OIS) and Video Digital Image Stabilisation (VDIS) to ensure smooth video even in difficult lighting conditions.

Samsung has a nifty software solution for video too – Super Night Solution is capable of changing the video frame rate while recording depending on the circumstances.

If you record video at a rate lower than 24 frames per second, the device is able to produce up to 12 extra frames per second to plug the gaps and ensure a consistent frame rate.
