The South African Human Rights Commission (SAHRC) continues its investigation into the allegations of racism and discrimination at Cornwall Hill College, a prestigious Gauteng private school. On Tuesday, 27 July, the Commission called on the school management, pupils, staff and other interested parties to make written submissions to aid the investigation and address the issues.

SAHRC INVESTIGATES RACISM AT CORNWALL HILL COLLEGE

The SAHRC said its investigation will “inquire into, make findings, report on and make recommendations” with regard to the allegations of racism, lack of diversity and transformation at Cornwall Hill College.

The Commission wants the school’s management, Board of Directors, former and current pupils, staff and others to make written or oral submissions by Friday, 3 September 2021.

Earlier this year, in May, racism allegations surfaced and the school faced intense scrutiny that even prompted a visit from provincial education MEC Panyaza Lesufi.

“Some of the parents and learners (past and present) have made allegations against the said school, while others have embarked on a peaceful protest to voice their displeasure at the alleged racism,” said Lesufi in an earlier statement.

Approximately 15 black parents participated in a protest and called for an end to the alleged racism at the school’s annual golf day. Issues highlighted include a lack of inclusion and a discriminatory hair policy.

It is not the first time these sorts of allegations have been levelled at the school. Last year, Executive principal Leon Kunneke wrote an apology letter to parents and said racism was “morally wrong” and against the school’s values.

Submissions can be made to the SAHRC via email at cmtizi@sahrc.org.za / dmabasa@sahrc.org.za / mmnyakeni@sahrc.org.za or via WhatsApp at 082 059 6520.
