SABC boss Hlaudi Motsoeneng gives himself a one million Rand increase, earns more than Zuma

The SABC ran at a loss of over R365 million in the last year, yet COO Motsoeneng pushed his own salary up to R3.7 million, more than what the president earns.

So, we’re sitting with a national broadcaster that’s running at a loss; and its Chief Operating Officer Hlaudi Motsoeneng is constantly pushing for tighter media regulation even though he is one of the key players in the local media industry.

Now, while the ANC is pretty tied up with its own financial woes and corruption charge upon corruption charge looming; they did take a moment to weigh in on Motsoeneng’s little financial coup.

Hlaudi himself seems to think that, even though he’s incapable of doing his job effectively, as can be seen in the SABC’s terrible performance, he deserves a million Rand a year more and he even said that it’s ‘not a sin for a black man to earn a decent salary’.

“Anyone who is able to generate revenue for the SABC should be rewarded accordingly, even if those people are cleaners.”

Motsoeneng’s salary has increased more than 10-fold in the last five years, shooting up from just under R400 000 per annum to R3.7 million annually. The ANC — who must be loving Motsoeneng for mirroring their proposals for a more regulated media – doesn’t seem to think there’s much of a problem with this pay increase though.

“Our government has committed itself to tightening the belt including prudence within the public service broadly. Our failure to follow through with these commitments can only set a dangerous precedence that can’t be sustained and justified,” the party said.

“It is our view that economic trends should dictate decisions including remuneration for public servants.”
