SA Weather Service issues flood warning for EC and KZN

Wet weather is expected in parts of KZN and the EC that could lead to localised flooding and damage to roads and homes in low lying areas.

The South African Weather Service has issued a warning that heavy rains which could lead to localised flooding and damage to road infrastructure is expected across parts of the Eastern Cape on Friday.

SAWS issued yellow weather warning alert for several parts of the province which are expecting “disruptive rain”.

“The significant rain will result in localised flooding to formal/informal settlements or roads, low lying areas and bridges as well as traffic disruptions due to slippery roads and reduced visibility,” SAWS said.

Among the areas expected to be affected by the disruptive rainfall are:

*Umzimvubi/ Mount Ayliff

  • Nyandeni/Libode
  • Engcobo/Ncobo
  • Mhlontlo/Tsolo
  • Sakhisizwe/Elliot
  • Port St Johns
  • King Sabata Dalinyebo/Mthatha
  • Elundini/Maclear
  • Ntabankulu
  • Mbizana/Bizana
  • Emalahleni/Lady Frere
  • Mnquma/Butterworth
  • Ingquza Hill/Lusikisiki
  • Intsika Yethu/Cofimvaba

SAWS also issued a yellow impact based warning for KwaZulu-Natal for Friday for “disruptive rainfall leading to localised flooding of formal and informal settlement, infrastructure damage as well  as disruptions to main roads is expected over the central and eastern parts of KwaZulu-Natal.”

In Durban the weather is expected to be fine, becoming partly cloudy to cloudy with isolated afternoon  showers and thundershowers.

*Wind speed and direction will be a moderate north-easterly becoming fresh to strong south-westerly towards th afternoon.

*Minimum/Maximum Temperates are expected to be 18/29

And after the first few reports about a possible snow flurry hitting South Africa broke last week, the latest forecast and weather models are still predicting that the white stuff will arrive in the country before the weekend. On Friday evening, the majority of the flakes are set to fall – with both the Eastern Cape and KZN on track for a dusting.
