LIST: Flooded roads to AVOID in Tshwane

Torrential rains have been pouring in Gauteng and other parts of the country. These are the flooded roads you should avoid in Tshwane.

The City of Tshwane Emergency Services Department has urged motorists to find alternative routes as most roads and bridges are flooded. 

Torrential rains have been pouring in parts of Gauteng and have caused damage in parts of Tshwane. 

FLOODED ROADS TO AVOID IN TSHWANE 

According to the City of Tshwane Emergency Services Department, the disruptive rain experienced in various parts of the country in the past few days saw multiple incidents of flooding be reported to their Call Centre. 

Spokesperson, Deputy Chief Charles Mabaso said the rain has led to the closure of some low-lying water bridges and some damages reported on some routes and households requiring water to be channelled away from houses.

The following roads have been affected by flooding and must be avoided until further notice:

  • Nellmapius and Luton Street – River is overflowing on to the road (Highveld, Centurion)
  • Stoffel Park Bridge (Mamelodi)
  • End and Rabie Street (Centurion)
  • Olievenhoutbosch between Ext 19 and 60, water is over the bridge
  • Lenchen Street near the Centurion Lake Hotel
  • Wierda Road near N14, road is sagging due to a possible sink hole
  • South and West Street (centurion)
  • Blackwood Road (Centurion)
  • Lyttleton Road (Club View, Centurion)
  • Rebecca and Vom Hagen Street (Pretoria West)
  • M32 Nelmapius Road near Irene Farm

Mabaso said they together with the Tshwane Metro Police are monitoring the known hotspots and effecting road closures as may be required. 

SOME OF THE INCIDENTS REPORTED: 

  • One vehicle attempted to cross a flooded road and got stuck near Supersport Cricket Stadium, Centurion. The occupants managed to escape unharmed.
  • Households in Mooiplaas informal settlement, Mamelodi East Ext 18, Lotus Garden, Nellmapius Ext 24 and Soshanguve Ext 13 reported water locked yards and water entering their houses. 

No injuries were reported, situational assessment by disaster management teams is reportedly underway and City of Tshwane utility services in a specific region has been activated to channel water away from the affected households.

Residents have since been advised against crossing flooded waterways and low water bridges as this has led to loss of lives and property previously.
