RIP: SANDF soldier dies, two injured in Atteridgeville attack

The South African National Defence Force (SANDF) has confirmed that a soldier has died and two others injured during an attack

The South African National Defence Force (SANDF) has confirmed that a soldier has died and two others injured during an attack in Atteridgeville, Gauteng.

OFF-DUTY SANDF SOLIDERS ATTACKED

Brigadier General Andries Mokoena Mahapa, the Director of Defence Corporate Communication, confirmed the tragic incident.

“The South African National Defence Force (SANDF) confirms that a shooting incident occurred in Attridgeville on 15 October 2022 that resulted in the death of one (1) soldier and the injury of two (2) soldiers, who were then transported to 1 Military Hospital in Thaba Tshwane for further treatment,” said Brigadier General Mahapa.


“The incident occurred when the soldiers were off duty.”

SAPS TASKED TO INVESTIGATE THE MURDER CASE


He said currently, the South African Police Service (SAPS) is investigating the incident, and the deceased’s name will be confirmed once the next of kin has been notified.

“The Minister of Defence and Military Veterans, Thandi Modise, the Deputy Minister of Defence and Military Veterans Thabang Makwetla, the Secretary for Defence, Amb. Sonto Kudjoe and the Chief of the South African National Defence Force, General Rudzani Maphwanya and the entire defence family send their heartfelt condolences to the bereaved family,” said Brigadier General Mahapa.

Meanwhile, another SANDF soldier passed away in Mozambique while serving as part of a cross-border operation in July.
Johan Van Rooyen, a senior Sergeant for SANDF, had been serving as part of Operation VIKELA.

The soldier presented himself to hospital when he came down with chest pains and a severe headache’. He was transferred to another facility in Pemba.
However, his condition worsened before the weekend and he sadly passed away from his illness.

Operation VIKELA was launched to tackle the insurgency in Mozambique, led by radical Islamist militants.
