Fisherman falls after hooking a “big one”

The fisherman lost his balance when the line broke while trying to reel a large fish. He fell backward about 3 meters, injuring himself.

A fisherman was rescued after falling 3 meters down a broken gulley while trying to reel a large fish.

FISHERMAN FALLS 3 METERS INTO GULLEY

The 41-year-old fisherman was fishing at the Steenbras River Mouth, between Gordon’s Bay and Kogel Bay, on the eastern coastline of False Bay, on Saturday afternoon, 7 January 2023.

David Nel, the spokesperson for Wilderness Search and Rescue (WSAR), said dedicated teams of professionals and volunteers safely rescued the fallen fisherman.

“According to the fisherman, he lost his balance when the line broke while trying to reel in a large fish.

“He fell backward and tumbled approximately 3 meters into a broken gulley injuring himself.”

HE LOST HIS BALANCE AS HE TRIED TO REEL IN A LARGE FISH

Nel said the fisherman was unable to move from where he had fallen.

He said WSAR teams were immediately dispatched to the area where the fisherman fell.

THE RESCUE TEAM HOISTED THE FISHER UP ONTO A HELICOPTER

The Western Cape Department of Health activated the Air Mercy Service (AMS) rescue helicopter.

A small WSAR team was hoisted down to the patient.

“After assessing the patient’s injuries, he was packaged into a stretcher and hoisted up to the helicopter.

“He was flown to a nearby landing zone, before being transported to the hospital by ambulance,” Nel said.
