The African National Congress (ANC) in the City of Ekurhuleni has welcomed the removal of the Economic Freedom Fighter’s Nkululeko Dunga as MMC of Finance.

On Wednesday, the newly-elected City of Ekurhuleni Mayor Doctor Xhakaza said he removed Dunga after careful consideration and unforeseen misalignments.

Xhakaza said the decision aims to ensure that the municipality can fast-track the completion and approval of the annual budget.

MMC for City Planning and Economic Development Nomadlozi Nkosi will oversee the Finance portfolio for now.

Dlozi is the chairperson of both the Governance and Economic Mayoral Cluster and the Budget Steering Committee.

The ANC said the decision was accordingly endorsed following the governance update report, which reportedly pointed to fundamental weaknesses in how the budget process has been handled and the city’s seriously regressing financial position. The ANC said they have long raised this matter with no notable effort to turnaround the dire situation.

“We firmly believe that every Member of the Mayoral Committee must be committed to a co-ordinated way of governance, under the guidance of the Executive Mayor, including accountability, which was not the case.

“We take this opportunity to appreciate the contribution made by the former MMC and wish him well in his future responsibilities,” ANC Ekurhuleni Regional Task Team (RTT) Jongizizwe Dlabathi said.

Dunga’s removal comes as the ANC’s relationship with the EFF in Gauteng has reportedly turned sour.

On Wednesday, the ANC in KwaZulu-Natal also confirmed the redeployment of eThekwini Municipality mayor Mxolisi Kaunda to the National Council of Provinces (NCOP).

Following the decision, the ANC said that as it ushers in a new era following the National and Provincial Elections, it identifies key areas that require urgent focus.

“We strongly believe that, with his experience, Mxolisi Kaunda has a vital role in the NCOP.

“We thank him for his dedication during the most difficult period, such as the ravaging floods, the outbreak of COVID-19, and many other challenges. Equally, we thank him for serving the people of eThekwini with dedication,” ANC KZN spokesperson Mafika Mndebele said.

Kaunda previously served as the MEC for Transport, Community, and Liaison until his redeployment to eThekwini Municipality in August 2019.

“Finally, we will announce as a matter of urgency after consultation with relevant structures and leaders who will replace Mxolisi Kaunda,” Mndebele said.
