It started out as a 59-person shortlist and the parliamentary committee whose responsibility it was to finalise the candidates have narrowed it down to just 14 candidates.

The committee is made up of MPs from the ANC, DA, EFF and a few other parties and was tasked with finding the next Public Protector, which is no small task as Thuli Madonsela has set the standard incredibly high.

The 14-person final list reads as follows:

  • Judge Siraj Desai (High Court in Cape Town)
  • Justice Sharise Weiner
  • Adv Kevin Sifiso Malunga (Current deputy public protector)
  • Adv Mamiki Goodman
  • Busisiwe Mkhwebane (former director at the Department of home affairs)
  • Jill Claudelle Oliphant
  • Michael Mthembu
  • Prof Narnia Bohler-Muller
  • Adv William Andrew Hofmeyr (deputy director of Public Prosecution)
  • Adv Nonkosi Princess Cetywayo (Sheriff of Belville High Court)
  • Bongani Majola
  • Kaajal Ramjathan-Keogh (executive director of the Southern Africa Litigation Centre)
  • Muvhango Lukhaimane (Pension Funds Adjudicator)
  • Adv Chris Madibeng Mokoditwa

Interviews will be held on August 11, where candidates will have the opportunity to impress the panel.
