“Organise” and “mobilisation,” these are the words that former Finance Minister Pravin Gordhan used when calling all people of South Africa to rise up and take action against the corruption in government.

On Monday, leadership of the DA, EFF, IFP, COPE, UDM and ACDP had a joint meeting to discuss how they can unite to protect the country.  In a joint statement from the opposition, the parties stressed joint mobilisation will take place, no matter your political affiliation.

“It was agreed that as Opposition Parties, we will start the process of mobilising their structures from across the country for a National Day of Action to the Union Buildings. We will also be engaging Civil Society formations and other Political Parties to mobilise in order to support the people’s National Day of Action to the Union Buildings, so that we are united and not fractured in our call to save our country in the short-term.”

The DA had originally planned to march to ANC headquarters Luthuli House on Friday, they have since changed their minds after consulting the opposition. EFF leader Julius Malema had previously said a march to ANC headquarters was not a good idea as it would help unite those in the ruling party.  The opposition (including the DA) will now march to Beyers Naude Square in Johannesburg instead.

“This is not a party political matter. It is a matter of urgent national importance, which affects all of us as South Africans, and thus transcends party politics.”

All opposition parties say they are united behind the no-confidence motion as well as all the legal action that is taking place. The DA has requested a motion of no confidence debate in Parliament, House Speaker Baleka Mbete is considering the request. The EFF, COPE and UDM have filed papers to the Constitutional Court looking to get the court to intervene and force Mbete to begin Impeachment Proceedings against Zuma.
