Rapist dies in court cell after guilty verdict

The convicted rapist was yet to be sentenced at the time of his death. He had however pleaded guilty and asked for forgiveness

The might of the charges face proved too much for a 35 year old man, who collapsed and died in court cells after pleading guilty to 14 charges of rape and 11 charges of robbery with aggravated circumstances.

CONVICTED RAPIST’S CAUSE OF DEATH IS UNKNOWN

The man was standing trial at the North West High Court sitting in the Ga-Rankuwa Regional Court, took responsibility for all charges and had asked for forgiveness from his victims. However while court was in recess to allow for him to receive medical attention, he collapsed in the cell and was declared dead by paramedics.

Judge Andre Peterson, who had found him guilty due to his guilty plea, declared proceedings as finalised and he ordered for the death certificate to be filed with the registrar.

Shabangu had yet to be sentenced, as Judge Peterson initially rolled the trial over to Thursday, for victim impact statements and sentencing.

The charges the deceased face resulted from crimes committed between July 2012 and December 2019 in Winterveldt.

YOUNGEST VICTIM WAS 14 AT THE TIME

According to NPA North West spokesperson Henry Mamothame, Shabangu and his unknown accomplices, raped and robbed multiple women of their properties.

“Would confront couples coming from places of leisure in the evenings, threaten them with a firearm, beat up the boyfriends, rob them of their belongings and subsequently take turns to rape the female victims,” says Mamothame.

“In other instances, they would accost a group of women and rob them before picking on one of them to rape. The youngest of their victim was 14 years of age and her ordeal took place in June 2015” Mamothame added.

Judge Peterson has requested an inquest docket be opened to determine the cause of death.
