A Hoopstad 40-year old man has been handed down a hefty prison sentence less than two months after he abducted and repeatedly raped his former girlfriend at his home.

SAPS spokesperson for the Free State region, Captain Stephen Thakeng, said that the man, Pheello Johannes Daki, had been found guilty of the rape after he forcefully took the woman to his home in October. The incident occurred on 13 October 2021.

Thakeng said that the victim, a 26-year-old woman had visited her boyfriend, and shortly afterwards, her ex boyfriend, Daki, had arrived and attacked her current boyfriend.

“He ran to Hoopstad Police Station to report the incident. The ex-boyfriend forcefully took the victim to his residence and raped her until the next morning. After the rape ordeal she went to the police station to report the incident by registering a rape case,” he said.

He said the rape case was assigned to Detective Sergeant Ntomzoto Selemogo of the Family Violence, Child Protection and Sexual Offences Unit in the province.

Daki appeared in the Hoopstad Regional Court where he was found guilty of the charge of rape and assault. He was then handed down a life prison sentence for the rape, two years for assault and a further twelve months for contravening a court order.

SAPS District Commissioner of Lejweleputswa , Major General Lerato Molale, welcomed the sentence imposed on the rapist

“We hope this heavy sentence will serve as a deterrent to would be rapists especially as we are celebrating 16 Days of Activism Against Women and Children,” he said.

He also commended Detective Sergeant Selemogo for his thorough investigation that led to the swift arrest and sentencing of the rapist.

This latest rape case is one of several serious and violent crimes against women and children, including murder, that have been reported in the Free State region in the past two months.
