Two children under the age of 5 were declared dead on scene while others were injured in a serious collision in Underberg, KwaZulu-Natal.

Two minors lost their lives while four other people were injured in a serious collision in Underberg, KwaZulu-Natal.

Two children have died while four others were injured in a serious collision along the R617 Coleford Turnoff outside of Underberg towards Bulwer in KwaZulu-Natal.  

The accident happened on Tuesday morning, 4 October 2022. 

MINORS DIE IN UNDERBERG COLLISION 

According to Underberg Emergency Medical Services (UEMS), on arrival, crews found a single light motor vehicle crushed between two trucks. 

Paramedics assessed the scene and found six occupants of the single vehicle severely entrapped in the vehicle. 

“Unfortunately on gaining access into the vehicle, two children under the age of 5 had already succumbed to their injuries. Another child, approximately 5 years old, had sustained critical injuries and was treated by UEMS advanced life support paramedic. 

“Three other occupants of the vehicle sustained moderate injuries. All patients were extricated by the local fire department and transported by UEMS to a nearby hospital for the further medical care they required.”

In a separate incident, a mother and her one-year-old baby are fighting for their lives following a collision involving a heavy duty vehicle on the R21 in Pretoria East, Gauteng. The accident happened on Sunday, 2 October.

According to emergency service, Emer-G-Med, reports from the scene were that a truck and trailer were found to have overturned. Closer inspection found a mother and a one year old baby pinned under the cab of the truck.

Emer-G-Med spokesperson, Kyle van Reenen said both mother and the baby were in a critical condition. 

“Several advanced life support intervention methods were needed to stabilise them before they were transported rapidly by ambulance to a nearby hospital for further care.

“The facts surrounding the incident and the events preceding it are unclear and will form the subject of a South African Police Service investigation.”
