R5000 is all it took for Police constable Lucky Mudau accused of shooting his ex-partner, a nurse to be out on bail.

The bail hearing was heard yesterday, Wednesday, 20 July, when Mudau in a wheelchair was granted bail.

OPINION ON THE R5000 BAIL

Reflecting on the case, the Democratic Nursing Organisation of South Africa (DENOSA) in Gauteng found the granting of R5000 bail to the brutal killer of nurse Lebogang Monene by the court an insult and spitting in the face of fallen victims.

This as well as a missed opportunity by the justice system to send a strong message against future perpetrators.

“The pain that the family of our colleague is going through as a result of this decision by the court is indescribable.

In fact, the message the Magistrate’s Court in Tembisa sent through the granting of bail to the killer of Lebo is: as long as you have the money, you can get away from facing the consequences of your gruesome act onto another person,” DENOSA stated.

HOW DENOSA FEELS ABOUT THE R5000 BAIL

DENOSA added: “The decision by the court is contradicting the feelings of the victims of abuse and their families, especially in a country where everyday women and children are killed heartlessly.”

“To say the granting of R5000 bail to the heartless man by the court is shocking would be an understatement. Simply put, the justice system has failed Lebogang Monene!”

HOW NURSE LEBO MONENE WAS KILLED AT WORK

On 9 February this year, Mudau turned the gun on himself after allegedly shooting his ex-partner at Tembisa Hospital.

As a result, the alleged killer became a quadriplegic and confined to a wheelchair.

Lebo was an assistant nurse during the time of her brutal death.

The R5000 bail recipient is expected to return to court on 21 September.
