The transfer of Gabadinho Mhango from Bidvest Wits to Orlando Pirates was pretty much confirmed when the Buccaneers revealed they had reached an agreement with the Clever Boys.

The fee has not been disclosed and the 26-year-old will need to undergo a medical assessment before the transfer is 100% confirmed.

But barring any unforeseen circumstances, Mhango will join the rest of the Pirates squad in training on Thursday 27 June.

“Orlando Pirates Football Club can confirm that it has reached an agreement with Bidvest Wits for the services of forward Gabadinho Mhango,” the club said in a statement published on their official website.

“The 26 year old Malawian international will undergo a medical tomorrow and join his new teammates for the afternoon training session.

“Orlando Pirates Football Club would like to thank Wits’ management for the professional manner that these negotiations were conducted.”

Career to date

Despite being from Malawi, Mhango is well-known to South African audiences as he has spent most of his career in the Rainbow Nation.

He began his career as a youth player for Brave Warriors before moving to Big Bullets FC, based in Blantyre. After two seasons there in 2012 and 2013, Gabadinho was signed by Bloemfontein Celtic.

He played for Siwelele for three years, making 45 Premiership appearances and scoring 15 goals before moving to Golden Arrows for the 2015 season.

He was far more prolific there, bagging five goals in just 13 games to catch the eye of scouts at Wits.

He signed for the Gauteng club at the start of the 2016 season and has struggled to hit the back of the net with regularity, scoring just 11 times in 41 league appearances.

However, his physical presence up front was obviously enough to convince Orlando Pirates he could do a job for them in the coming season.

Pirates begin their 2019/20 season with the Carling Cup pre-season fixture against Kaizer Chiefs at FNB Stadium on 27 July before kicking off their league campaign against Mhango’s old club Bloemfontein Celtic on Saturday 3 August.
