ICYMI – Prison warder shot multiple times while son hid in his room

A 12-year-old boy’s life was spared as his father who is a prison warder was allegedly shot multiple times in Hazelmere, KwaZulu-Natal.

A 45-year- old prison warder was allegedly shot multiple times while his son hid in his room at their home in Hazelmere, KwaZulu-Natal. 

The incident reportedly happened in the early hours of Thursday, 27 October.

PRISON WARDER SHOT DEAD IN KZN 

According to private security, Reaction Unit South Africa (RUSA) they received a call for assistance at approximately 07:39. 

On arrival, the prison warder’s lifeless body was located in one of the bedrooms and he was shot multiple times. His 12-year-old son who was in the house at the time of the execution was not injured. 

RUSA spokesperson Prem Balram said it was established that the son was in his bedroom at approximately 01:00 when he heard his father scream for a person to identify themselves before a shot was fired. He thereafter heard his dad crying for help before several more shots were fired.

Balram said the 12-year-old boy hid in his room and made telephonic contact with his mother who lives in Umlazi, south of Durban who reportedly asked him to remain in his room while she made arrangements to be transported to Hazelmere. 

Several hours reportedly passed and the mother could not secure transportation. Instead she then contacted a friend of the prison warder and informed him that she was unable to acquire transportation to the area. 

“The friend proceeded to the residence and entered through an unlocked garage door. He discovered the bullet riddled body of his friend in one of the bedrooms while his son was located hiding in the room. The motive for the murder has not been established.”
