Within a few hours of the announcement of the death of Prince Philip Tweeple were out in full force with a mixed bag of reactions, some kind and others outrightly cruel.

But most telling was that Meghan and Piers Morgan were soon trending too as many defended the couple’s controversial interview, during which the TV host reprimanded the couple for divulging Royal secrets while Prince Philip was so ill.

There were some 600 000 tweets about Prince Philip trending in South Africa alone within just a few hours of the announcement.

Many Tweeps remarked how he had almost lived 10 decades to hit the age of 100 and that he had had a good innings, while others accused him of being a racist.

Summing up the nature of the insensitive, gleeful and cruel reactions on Twitter was @Tomathius who Tweeted:

“ I just want to know why people are so happy Prince Philip is dead.

People on Twitter were openly happy when they learned I tried to kill myself. It’s not exactly fun to hear the same thing is happening to someone else. So, can someone please tell me what Prince Philip did?

@revrrlewis shared a clip of news reporters referring to the Piers Morgan interview with Harry and Meghan. He tweeted: “Brian Kilmeade cites Piers Morgan to again suggest that Meghan Markle and Prince Harry killed Prince Philip with their Oprah interview.”

To which @Peopleafteru replied: “No doubt that interview was hard on Prince Phillip when he was sick in the hospital and couldn’t support his Queen and the Monarchy he spend most of his life serving.  Tasteless of Meghan and Harry to have their self-serving interview while he was so sick in the hospital.

But @itsprkles responded in agreement with many who ridiculed Morgan:

“Oh FFS. The man was 99. News outlets have had his obituary pieces written & ready to print for decades already. It’s no more anyone’s fault he passed away than it is the sun rising in the east.”

@stadathi quipped: “He was 99yo, an age most people do not reach. It had nothing to do with the interview. He’s not the first 99yo to die n won’t be the last. Prince Philip lived his best life, Meghan n Harry are doing the same.”

@BWorded_ Tweeted:  “Has anyone checked on Piece Morgan now that Prince Philip has taken an eternal bow from life?”

The Duchess of Durban @AndileAndyDube Tweeted simply: “Rest in Peace to His Royal Highnesses,Prince Philip Duke of Edinburgh.”
