New price list: MOST toll road fees – including e-tolls – to increase in March

How much? Toll road fees across the nation are set to rise next month – and even the unpopular ‘e-tolls system’ is getting more expensive.

Motorists of Mzansi, we don’t come bearing good news here: The Transport Minister has confirmed that MOST toll roads in South Africa will experience a price hike, starting from the first minute of Monday 1 March 2021. The increase, which also extends to the controversial e-tolls network in Gauteng, will come into effect in just over two weeks’ time.

E-tolls will continue for the foreseeable future

The changes, which were gazetted on Thursday, slipped under the radar yesterday, as all eyes were on Cyril Ramaphosa. He delivered a very different-looking State of the Nation Address. But, like he’s done at his most recent SONAs, the president completely overlooked the thorny issues of e-tolls.

The Gauteng gantries have been an unmitigated disaster since their inception in 2013. Various politicians, usually during election season, have vowed to bring these toll roads to a close. Alas, they continue in their current form – despite roughly 70 – 75% of all road users refusing pay for their fees.

For whom the e-tolls: Here’s how much you will have to pay in toll road fees from March

The very thin silver-lining here is the fact that charges are only increasing by about 3% – 3.5% across all 47 gates across the province. At R5.60 per trip, the Swael and Letata gates on the R21 remain the most expensive of the lot.

Meanwhile, toll road fees for the N1, N2, N3, and N4 have also been declared for the following year. A majority of them are also going up, but the increase is still smaller than the one in place for e-tolls. The highest fee you’ll have to pay at a single booth in South Africa is at the Machado Plaza on the N4, which bills motorists R99 to pass through the barriers.
