Police say community allegedly beat a man to death after robbery attempt

The body of a 22-year-old man was found in an Eastern Cape village on Tuesday night. The police suspect the killing was an act of vigilantism.

The dead body of a 22-year-old man was found in Ngcingwane Village, Dutywa, in the Eastern Cape on Tuesday night, 14 September. The police believe the man’s death is the result of yet another act of vigilantism in the province.

POLICE INVESTIGATE ALLEGED VIGILANTISM

According to a South African Police Service (SAPS) spokesperson, Captain Siphokazi Mawisa, the authorities were alerted to a body lying next to the road in the village.“They rushed to the scene and on arrival the found the body with injuries.”

Further investigation at the scene revealed that the deceased was allegedly beaten to death by members of the community after he and a group of men allegedly attempted to rob a shop.

The shop owner allegedly alerted the members of the community about the attempted robbery and the group the deceased was part of fled the scene. The community members reportedly caught up with the man and beat him to death.

The police said a case of murder has been opened for investigation and no arrests have been made thus far.

The Amathole Acting District Commissioner, Brigadier Ngangema Xakavu, condemned the incident. Those who take the law into their own hands will face the full might of the law. Police will not rest until the perpetrators are behind bars,” said Xakavu.
