Police have launched a manhunt after the well-known businessman, 86-year-old Edwin Sturgeon, was reportedly hacked to death in Barberton outside of Nelspruit.

PRELIMINARY INVESTIGATION SUGGESTS THAT HE MIGHT HAVE BEEN HACKED TO DEATH

According to police spokesperson Colonel Donald Mdhluli, no arrests have been made yet.

Sturgeon’s body was discovered on Wednesday morning, 20 October 2021.

“The victim’s body had open wounds in his upper body. Preliminary investigation suggests that he might have been hacked to death; however, forensic tests will be conducted.”

Mdhluli said some items appear to have been stolen, including cell phones and a laptop.

“A case of murder and robbery has since been opened by the police in Barberton.”

Police urge anyone with information on the whereabouts of the suspect(s) to call the Crime Stop number on 08600 10111 or send information via MYSAPSAPP. All received information will be treated as confidential, and callers may opt to remain anonymous.

While tributes have been pouring in for Sturgeon, the Barberton community has reportedly decorated Sturgeon’s home gate with flowers.

The Baberton SPCA said is shocked and deeply saddened by the senseless murder of their friend and dedicated animal lover, Sturgeon.

“Ned was a generous supporter of our animal charity, and we will miss his friendly smile at our book tables.

“We are grateful and touched that the request has gone out to honour his life by making a donation to our animals.

“Our sincerest condolences go out to his sons George and Tony, and his family and many friends. He will be missed.”

Details of his funeral are not yet known.

According to reports, Sturgeon managed Sturgeon’s Hardware Store with his brother until his retirement. He was also involved with the local business chamber until his retirement.
