Police investigate KZN drive-by shooting – two killed in a hail of bullets

Police said it is investigating the shooting in which at least 20 bullets hit the vehicle in KZN, two men were riddled with wounds.

Police are investigating the murders of two men who were gunned down in a hail of bullets on Saturday afternoon near Inanda in KwaZulu-Natal.

WHAT HAPPENED ON SATURDAY AFTERNOON?

Police spokesperson Lieutenant Colonel Nqobile Gwala said Verulam SAPS is investigating charges of murder.

“It is alleged that yesterday at 17:00 on the M27 Jabu Ngcobo Road, a vehicle was found in the sugarcane fields with bullet holes.

“Inside the sugarcane fields, police found two bodies of males believed to be in their twenties with multiple gunshot wounds to the body. Both victims were certified dead at the scene. The circumstances surrounding the incident are being investigated,” Gwala said.

THE BULLET RIDDLED BODIES OF THE TWO MEN WERE FOUND

According to Reaction Unit SA (RUSA) spokesperson Prem Balram, a motorist contacted RUSA at approximately 15H59 on Saturday after he noticed the occupants of a white BMW opening fire on a white Toyota Avanza with high caliber rifles.

“The caller informed the controller on duty that the Toyota Avanza was traveling from Inanda in the direction of Verulam when the BMW overtook and opened fire. He went on to explain that the Toyota Avanza veered off the road and into a sugarcane plantation. He could not confirm if the occupants were injured and continued driving as he was concerned for his safety,” Balram said.

A MOTORIST WITNESS THE SHOOTING

Reaction Officers and paramedics were immediately dispatched to the location provided.

Balram said on arrival, Reaction Officers met with officials from the Metro Police.

“First Responders entered the canefield and located the Toyota Avanza approximately 50 meters from the road. The vehicle had been shot in excess of 20 times.

“There were no occupants in the vehicle. Two separate blood trails were noticed leading further into the canefield in different directions.”

PARAMEDICS FOLLOWED THE BLOOD TRAILS

He said officers followed the blood trails and discovered the bullet-riddled bodies of two men. They were fatally injured in the shooting.

Police could not yet confirm the shooting or provide more information.

Meanwhile, the body of an unidentified male has been discovered on a sidewalk on Wick Street, Verulam on Sunday morning.

“At approximately 05:29 a member of the public contacted RUSA Operation Center after discovering the unresponsive male on the sidewalk.

“Reaction Officers and RUSA Medics were immediately dispatched to the scene and upon arrival located the lifeless body lying next to a vendors table. He showed no signs of life,” Balram said.

The man was declared dead on the scene.
