Police are still searching for five armed men who held up, robbed, and assaulted presenters at the MegaZone radio station on Friday evening.

According to Vishal Maharaj, CEO of MegaZone the armed robbery took place about 19h25 on Friday 25 June 2021.

“The radio jock was on air live doing a show but the hold-up and robbery occurred in the adjacent media office and not in the studio of the live broadcast.”

Maharaj said the jock and a guest were in the studio.

“They were not harmed because the entry into the studio is via biometric. It was us, myself and four other media staff, in the media room that got hold up.”

He said they were busy rounding up their monthly meeting.

“We heard glass shatter, we looked out through our window and noticed black males forcing entry into the adjacent hair salon.

“We instinctively ran to our front door to shout for security and I activated our alarm. But there was a gunman at our door already and forced entry into our offices.”

Maharaj said a second armed man also entered the offices of the radio station.

“They assaulted two male staff members and held me at gunpoint while demanding firearms. I responded that there are no firearms.

“They hit Lance with a gun and kicked him. They also assaulted Leshav Dilraj in the commotion and I had the gun pointed at my head while they made their demands.”

He said the armed men then started shouting for cellphones and commenced to rip out the various high-end pcs and laptops before running away with it all.

Maharaj said there were five armed men, two inside the office and three outside the building.

Megazone Bollywood 104.8FM is a station the plays north Indian Bollywood music.

Lance Nayager, one of the presenters who was assaulted, earlier on Saturday said he was on his way to the hospital.

“I am not ok after Friday night, I was hit with a gun on the side of my face and kicked by the suspects.”

Nayager added that they were all still in shock.

Colonel Thembeka Mbele, police spokesperson confirmed the robbery on Saturday.

She said police are investigating a business robbery of both the radio station and the hair salon.

“The suspects took the cellphones and laptops from the area tables in offices.”

Mbele said it was five armed men in balaclavas and wearing gloves.

“The men were armed with pistols and a 10-pound hammer.”

She said items that were stolen included cellphones, computers, and laptops.

“At the dream hair salon the main glass door was damaged using the 10-pound hammer and 400 hair pieces was taken “

She furthermore said the total value of the stolen goods is R1.2 million.
