Police: Four dead bodies found wrapped in plastic in Benoni

‘The bodies are not identified yet, but are suspected to be that of illegal miners,’ said a Gauteng police spokesperson.

The Gauteng police have opened an inquest docket after four dead bodies were found in Benoni on Tuesday night, 12 April. The deceased are believed to be illegal miners, said the authorities.

DEAD BODIES FOUND IN BENONI

South African Police Service (SAPS) spokesperson Lieutenant-Colonel Mavela Masondo said the deceased are suspected to be illegal miners.

“The bodies are not identified yet, but are suspected to be that of illegal miners,” said the police spokesperson.

Masondo said officers received an anonymous tip-off about the four bodies wrapped in plastic and blankets that were left at the side of the road.

According to reports, the discovery was made at the corner of snake and Voortrekker Roads at approximately 20:15.

Autopsies will be conducted to determine the causes of death.
