The police in Gauteng arrested five suspects for hijacking, kidnapping and possession of an unlicensed firearm and ammunition on Thursday, 26 May.

POLICE ARREST HIJACKING SUSPECTS

South African Police Service (SAPS) spokesperson Captain Dube said members from the Mondeor police station were patrolling the area when they came across a suspicious vehicle on Swartkoppies Road in Mayfield Park.

The vehicle had no license plate and was standing at the side of the road. Upon further investigation, the officers found that one of the vehicle’s occupants had been kidnapped by the others after allegedly being hijacked in Eden Park.

The police also found an unlicensed firearm with the serial number filed off in the car. The five suspects are expected to appear before the Booysens Magistrate’s Court imminently.

CHASE ENDS WITH CRASH

In an unrelated incident in the Eastern Cape, three alleged hijackers were arrested within minutes of hijacking an e-hailing driver on Wednesday night.

As previously reported, the suspects posed as clients and pulled a weapon on the victim as he was driving along Missionvale Road, Kyuga.

The suspects took the vehicle but before long it was spotted by police officers and a high-speed chase ensued.

The chase came to an end when the suspects crashed the vehicle into another car and tried to escape on foot but they didn’t get very far.

The suspects – aged 22, 26 and 35 – were charged with possession of a hijacked vehicle and reckless and negligent driving.
