The South African Police arrested four suspects with suspected stolen fibre and electric cable worth R250 000 while they were busy peeling it in a car.

SUSPECTS WERE PEELING ELECTRIC CABLES

The police’s Economic Infrastructure Task Team (EITT) members conducted an operation at Umlazi when they made the arrest.

The suspects, aged between 27 and 42, were arrested on the spot for the possesion of suspected stolen fibre and electric cable.

Police Spokesperson Constable Thenjiswa Ngcobo said the members patrolled along Sibusiso Mdakane Road when they spotted a vehicle offloading suspicious-looking property. As they approached the car to investigate, police noticed four suspects peeling off electric cables.

“Four suspects, aged between 27 and 42, were immediately arrested for possessing suspected stolen goods. The suspects appeared before Umlazi Magistrate’s Court on Wednesday, 25 January 2023.”

Nqcobo says the suspects remain in custody until their next court appearance on 1 February 2023.

In Johannesburg, City Power has recorded about 33 incidents of vandalism and electric cable theft between Monday, 16 January 2023 and Thursday, 19 January 2023.

CITY POWER ASK COMMUNITIES TO REPORT CABLE THEFT AND VANDALISM

This includes several minisub stations that were vandalised in different areas.

The entity’s Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Tshifularo Mashava said they have adopted an infrastructure security strategy cantered around the communities, including crime information gathering and special security operations, the use of technology, the armed response, local security contracting, and recruitment of more security officers.

Mashava urges residents to be vigilant and appeals to them to continue being the custodians of the electricity infrastructure and report any suspicious activities around it.

He said residents should report suspects stealing electric cable.
