A drunken driver and his three passengers were arrested after they tried to intimate metro police officers standing down on an accident scene on Wednesday, 22 February 2023.

The incident happened when officers of the Ekurhuleni Metro Police Department reacted to a motor vehicle accident on RTJ Namane Road near the St John church at Temong section in Thembisa.

EMPD spokesperson Constable Marie Mashishi said when officers on patrol arrived at the scene, they found two vehicles had been in an accident.

PASSENGERS TRIED TO INTIMIDATE EMPD OFFICERS

There was a damaged maroon Renault Kwid and a smashed silver VW Polo. Four people were standing next to the VW Polo, claiming to be occupants of both vehicles.

Mashishi says both drivers were called, and while officers were recording their details, they realized the 37-year-old male driver of the VW Polo did not have a valid driver’s license.

Mashishi said he also appeared intoxicated. A breathalyzer/algometer test indicated that he was over the legal limit.

DRUNKEN DRIVER AND PASSENGERS ARRESTED

As EMPD officers were busy with the drunken driver, three passengers, a 30-year-old female and two males aged 35 and 36, from the VW Polo intimidated and interfered with the officer’s duties. One of the males claimed to be a police officer,” Mashishi continued.

The drunken driver and his three passengers were handcuffed and arrested; They were taken to Rabasotho police station.

The suspects face charges of driving while under the Influence of alcohol, intimidation, crimen injuria, and impersonation of a police officer. The pretend police officer also lied.

The drunken driver and his passengers will soon appear at the Rabasotho Magistrate’s Court.
