Police: ‘Relative’ arrested for rape and murder of 90-year-old woman
The victim was asleep in her room when the suspect walked in and allegedly raped her before strangling her on Wednesday.

A 26-year-old man was arrested for the alleged rape and murder of a 90-year-old woman in the Eastern Cape on Wednesday, 17 August. The suspect is reportedly related to the victim.
SUSPECT ARESTED FOR RAPE AND MURDER OF ELDERLY VICTIM
South African Police Service (SAPS) spokesperson Brigadier Tembinkosi Kinana said the incident occurred in the East Bank Locality outside Tsomo.
Kinana said the elderly victim was reportedly asleep in her room when the suspect entered it and proceeded to rape her before allegedly strangling her to death.
“The deceased was allegedly discovered by one of the family members who immediately alerted the police. The suspect was subsequently arrested and is believed to be related to the deceased,” said the police spokesperson.
Cases of rape and murder are being investigated. The 26-year-old suspect is expected to appear before the Tsomo Magistrate’s Court once charged.
Lieutenant-General, Nomthetheleli Mene, the Eastern Cape police commissioner, welcomed the suspect’s swift arrest and condemned the incident.
In an unrelated incident in Limpopo, the police launched a manhunt for unknown suspects after Lindy Oberholtzer was found dead inside her Polokwane home on Wednesday. The motive for the killing is unknown.
