It seems our country’s battle with violence against women is still very much a losing one. Now, an apparent Pietermaritzburg murder has led to the body of a woman being discovered in the boot of her car.

According to The Witness, the woman, believed to be a teacher, was found in Copesville, Pietermaritzburg on Friday night.

But unlike with other murder cases where there is little to no fast action from authorities, an arrest was made early on Saturday morning. That’s after local police and private security company, RZS Protection, followed up on a tip-off received about the alleged murder.

RZS Protection says more arrests are expected soon.
When discovering the woman’s body, officers found her to be bleeding from the head. They identified several head injuries. Several stolen items have also been recovered as part of that investigation.

Sadly, murder stories like this are all too common for South African women. Between 2015 and 2020, just under 14 000 adult women were murdered. Between 2019 and 2012, 2,695 women were killed. That means roughly 7 women are killed in South Africa every single day. Until the country becomes safer, this Pietermaritzburg murder will go down as just another number on that list.
