THOUSANDS OF DEAD FISH ON HARTBEESPOORT SHORE

According to Casper Kruger of the Hartbeespoort Optimum Fisheries and Research, a lack of oxygen, overstocking of fish, and bad water coming into the dam are to blame, as reported by the local community newspaper, Kormorant

DEPARTMENT OF WATER AND SANITATION LAUNCH INVESTIGATION

The Department of Water and Sanitation and the Sefako Makgatho Health Science University launched an investigation into the deaths of thousands of fish at Hartbeespoort Dam.

Kruger confirmed the meeting with the department on Thursday. It’s said that the parties are now on the same page regarding the investigation.

Water and Sanitation spokesperson Wisane Mavasa said that some fish were still alive and were removed and relocated to an off-site dam where they recovered.

“The department recently appointed its entity, Magalies Water, to develop a resource management and remediation plan for Hartbeespoort Dam.”

“The aim is to address the poor water quality of the dam. Also to minimise and control the algae and hyacinths that compromise water quality and use of the dam,” says Mavasa.

Kruger said that he requested that samples be taken of the water and that tests be done on dead and alive fish.
