The City of Cape Town has announced that four private sector housing developments have received the go-ahead, and will provide 240 housing units in Philippi.
‘We are all aware of the dire need for affordable housing in Cape Town. Approximately 30% of the land in Knole Park is vacant and neglected, making it prone to crime and invasions.”

These affordable housing developments will be situated between Strandfontein and Ottery, and will greatly utilise the urban vacant land in the area. This development will further aid in establishing housing units for middle-income households.
The developments will be stone’s throw away from public transport services and major routes. Providing residents with easy access to industrial and commercial areas, as well as improving the general safety of the local community.
The developers are obliged to:

In a recent battle, the City’s Planning Appeals Advisory Panel dismissed appeals against this development, which now ushers the green-light of this social housing unit development.
“The panel’s decision to dismiss the appeals is for the greater good of the local community. It also complies with the City of Cape Town’s Municipal Spatial Development Framework, that requires the City to protect the productive core.”

The City has a few affordable housing development units in the pipeline. Recently announced the Salt River Market rezoning will provide 723 residential units, which is inclusive of business premises, informal trading opportunities and social housing consisting of 216 units available for qualifying applicants.
The aims of this development are to build affordable housing units near the central business district of Cape Town. To qualify for the Salt River social housing units, candidates must earn between R3 500 and R20 000.
