Pensioner pulled out a knife and stabbed robber to death, say police

A 63-year-old man was approached by two men who offered to help him carry his groceries. The police said along the way the elderly man was robbed of his wallet and he allegedly retaliated by stabbing one of the men

An elderly suspect was arrested by the police in the Eastern Cape for allegedly stabbing a man to death in Elliot on Friday, 3 September. The deceased and another young man reportedly offered to help the suspect carry his groceries before the incident took place.

PENSIONER ARRESTED BY POLICE

A South African Police Service (SAPS) spokesperson, Captain Lariane Jonker, said the 63-year-old man was arrested for the murder of a 28-year-old man in Maclear Road, Elliot.

According to the police report, the suspect was allegedly on his way home after a trip to the shops when he was approached by two young men. The deceased and the other individual offered to help the elderly suspect carry his groceries.

The suspect was reportedly robbed of his wallet by the two young men and allegedly took out a knife and fatally stabbed one of the men.

The suspect is expected to make his first appearance in court imminently, said Jonker.

FACTIONAL VIOLENCE IN EC

In an unrelated matter, detectives in Port St Johns, in the Eastern Cape, are on the hunt for the suspects involved in a brutal triple murder at Tyeni location on Saturday, 4 September.

Sergeant Kaya Matola-Mvanyashe said the police visited areas where factions from Gangata, Siphusiphu, Ziphondo, Maqhinebeni and Mhlotseni were allegedly attacking the Tyeni community, on Sunday.

“The nearby forest where the incident took place was searched and two bodies were found.  A third body was later discovered. All three deceased were men,” said the police spokesperson.

“One victim survived the attack and was taken to hospital and is in a stable condition. All victims sustained gunshot wounds. Formal identification is yet to be conducted.”

The Tyeni community has reportedly fled the area over concerns for their safety after approximately 18 homesteads were razed. The police are investigating cases of murder and attempted murder.
