A male patient has stabbed two female doctors and another patient at the Robert Mangaliso Sobukwe Hospital in Kimberley on Friday 17 September before security finally restrained him. The incident has left the South African Medical Association (Sama) fuming at the state hospital.
Security was nowhere to be seen at the Robert Mangaliso Sobukwe Hospital when the male patient managed to stab the three people. The stabbed victims included two female doctors and another patient who was in the Kimberley facility’s casualty ward.
According to a dismayed Sama spokesperson Mvuyisi Mzukwa, questionable security at Mzansi hospitals is not a new issue. Way before this new Kimberley incident, questions have been asked, and pressure has long been applied but hardly any action has followed as medical professionals continue to suffer violence.
“We are obviously aware that there are security issues that we’ve been discussing with the government for a long time,” Mzukwa told EWN.

The fuming association added that the government has simply failed to improve doctors’ safety in Mzansi. In addition to the two stabbed Kimberley doctors, many others have died.
“We have the doctors who are on record, and those who have died, but that doesn’t do anything to the government of the country, so that’s where our appointment is,” Mzukwa concluded.
