Patient jumped to his death from fifth floor of Livingstone Hospital

The patient ran towards the window and smashed it with a metal jug before he threw himself through the hole he created on the fifth floor.

A patient at the Livingstone Hospital in Gqeberha jumped to his death from the fifth floor. 

THE 38-YEAR-OLD MALE PATIENT RAN TOWARDS THE WINDOW

Eastern Cape Health Department spokesperson Mkhululi Ndamase the tragic incident happened on Thursday. 

“It has transpired that the 38-year-old male patient admitted to a general ward acted without forewarning.

“According to the nurses on duty, the deceased allegedly proceeded to take a urinal metal jug while all at once ran towards the window using the jug to break the glass window,” Ndamasa said. 

He said the patient then threw himself through the hole that he had created. 

HE SMASHED THE WINDOW USING THE METAL JUG

“The incident was responded to immediately by relevant officials, with police also called to the accident scene. Sadly, the patient demised on impact.” 

The family of the deceased was informed immediately after the incident had occurred.

Eastern Cape Health MEC Nomakhosazana Meth has sent her deepest condolences to the deceased patient’s family. 

She described the incident as sad and unfortunate.

THE MAN WAS DECLARED DEAD ON THE SCENE

“The incident has shocked everyone at the hospital and department as we had hoped the man would recover and be reunited with his family.

“We send our deepest condolences to his family and friends. May the patient’s soul rest in peace.”

Psychological support was provided for all staff and patients who witnessed the unfortunate incident.
