Two security guards who work for the controversial pastor Sheperd Bushiri have been arrested in Midrand, KwaZulu-Natal (KZN), accused of the murder of a man who had allegedly been stealing from the self proclaimed prophet’s Enlightened Christian Gathering church.

Police in the province have launched a manhunt for another two guards who were allegedly involved in the killing, in which the four security guards are understood to have attacked the victim and another friend.

Manhunt underway

The two security guards who police have already apprehended were placed in handcuffs on Monday 25 May after one of the men who was allegedly assaulted led police to the scene of the crime, where his friend’s body was discovered.

Police spokesperson Captain Kay Makhubele said that an initial investigation revealed that there were other security guards who had subsequently fled from the scene.

“Police in Gauteng arrested two security guards yesterday, 25 May 2020 at about 10:00, after a man and his friend were attacked by security guards on the R55 in Midrand,” he said.

“The man led the police to the scene of crime where the body of his friend was recovered. It is alleged that the two friends were attacked by four security guards, who accused them of people who stole from Pastor Bushiri’s church in Midrand.”

“Two other security guards are still on the run.”

Police are appealing to the public to assist with any information that may lead to the guards’ arrest, as well as others who may have witnessed the crime itself.

Latest incident to hit Bushiri

Bushiri has had his fair share of controversial incidents relating to his church over the past few years, with himself and his wife currently facing charges of corruption

The Hawks have pursued the case since 2015, and after they had declared that Bushiri and his wife, Mary, committed crimes “in relation to Exchange Control Regulations related to foreign currency in an amount of $1 147 200″, the matter was taken to the courts. The pair is currently out on R200 000 bail

Three women were also killed in a stampede that broke out during one of his services in 2018.
