Oyster Box minister admits to wasting R1.2 million on a single event

Bathabile Dlamini — the minister who famously said the average South African can live off R753 a month while she stays in R11 000 a night hotel rooms — once again finds herself in the news for wasting money that doesn’t belong to her.

Dlamini, who’s minister of social development, – yeah, one of the departments that could really do with all the tax money she’s been wasting –  made the news a few times this year, but always for the wrong reasons.

First, when pushed on her department’s piss-poor track record she famously said the average South African can live off R753 a month; and just a few days later it came to light that she’d been treating herself to an R11 000 a night room at the Oyster Box in Umhlanga… again at the taxpayer’s expense.

On Wednesday we reported that the South African Social Security Agency, which falls under Dlamini’s leadership, had wasted R1 billion in the 2015/16 financial year, a 1000% increase in irregular spending.

BusinessTech reports that Dlamini skipped out on a Sassa event t the last minute earlier this year, costing in the region of R1.2 million essentially flushed down the drain. According to the City Press, Dlamini had been redeployed by the presidency just before she was meant to attend the event.

“I will have to ask my office to find out where exactly we were,” Dlamini said in response to questions by a less than impressed Standing Committee on Public Accounts (Scopa).
