Over 890 drunk driving arrests: JMPD releases June crime stats

The Johannesburg Metro Police Department releases June performance report in combat against crime.

The Johannesburg Metro Police Department just released the monthly performance statistics for June 2019, at the New Council Chambers. The key focus will be on the performance the department achieved this month in their crime-fighting labours.

Crime-fighting efforts report released

The Executive Mayor, Herman Mashaba was joined by the Councilor and MMC for Public Safety, Cllr Michael Sun, and Chief of Police David Tembe, for the presentation of June’s statistics. Mashaba gave a significant address:

“Crime undermines the quality of our lives in the City and South Africa at large. We need to protect our public and maintain rule of law. The police need to be given the powers they need to catch criminals. “

Since the inception of the performance statistics in September 2018, monthly reports have been made available to the public gathering statistics on the overall data of the province. Tembe announced a new change:

“This month we doing it differently by releasing the stats of each region specifically to focus on their individual performance.”

Statistics have been released for each region

Region B, which comprises of Randburg and Rosebank has over 93 arrests in relation to drinking and driving. There are five crime prevention operations designated, 29 roadside checks conducted, and 1395 citations issued.

Region B, which is Soweto has 136 drinking and driving arrests and 20 crime prevention operations inducted.

Region E consists of Alexandra, Sandton and Bramley, the Deputy Director E Sibiya has his hands full of dirt from this pollution problem. There are 3149 citations issued in this region alone.

Region F1 which comprises of Yeoville, Braamfontein and the inner city has 3994 citations issued. Acting Deputy Director D Machete has conducted 123 joint operations to combat crime.

“This region has a high number of bad/hijacked buildings. The Commander has intensified on operations dealing with these buildings and will continue to do so.”

Many types of crimes are being combated

The roads have also been tackled with intensive programmes, there were over 2900 stopped vehicles, 2500 vehicles that were searched, and 730 people searched. Tembe stated in the report:

“We can’t continue with a high number of fatalities on the freeway. Our efforts will be intensified.”

With the recent SAPS arrest of more than 400 wanted suspects in Gauteng for serious and violent crimes such as murder, armed robbery, fraud, rape, hijackings and assault. These monthly reports serve as a reminder for residents and policemen, that crime-fighting is well underway.
