Over 300 hippos and buffaloes in Kruger National Park to be culled due to drought

The worst drought in decades is still having an impact on South Africa.

Over 300 hippos and buffaloes

The effects of the worst drought in decades is far from over. The Kruger National Park will cull  350 hippopotamuses and buffaloes to “prevent deaths of other animals”, a spokesman for South African National Parks (SANParks).

The animals will be “humanely shot”, spokesman Ike Phaahla said.

The animals will be culled in order to stop them from eating grass that might allow others to survive. Phaahla said that many of the  hippos and buffaloes might have starved to death anyway.

The park currently has about 47 000 buffaloes and 7 500 hippopotamuses. The meat of the culled animals will also reportedly be donated to local communities.
