A Johannesburg woman has revealed the shocking details of her rape, she said she has done so as she “hopes her story will encourage other victims to come forward.” The woman was raped in the back of a Taxi in front of her own son, in an incident that the woman says lasted for four hours.

Speaking to EWN she explained how she and her 10-year-old son were in a Taxi on Ontdekkers Road on Sunday morning, she was then held at gunpoint and raped inside the vehicle. The three men involved in the incident also stole her bank card and forced her to reveal her pin number, they withdrew money from her account several times.

As her son was in the taxi with her, the woman says she was constantly worrying about how the ordeal would affect him. He was told to lie face down on the floor of the Taxi, while his mother was raped on the back seat.

“Then I could not imagine the whole time that I was there was praying that they wouldn’t even touch him. I didn’t like what happened to me and I don’t think any of us is okay with that.”

The woman also told EWN that she sometimes has massive doubts over the South African justice system.  She says that sometimes it feels like the system is not there for people like her. Police have confirmed that they are investigating a rape case as well as looking at several other incidents. Despite her scepticism, the woman has expressed her hope that SAPS will act quickly and her attackers will be arrested.

The 2015/16 crime stats show that 42,596 rapes were reported to police. Be careful of believing that number though as SAPS also reveal that only 77 rapes per 100 000 were reported in the same period. Sexual violence is a massive problem in this country, with not enough being done to effectively curtail or prosecute, fact not opinion.
