1994  | First day of voting in the first-ever multi-racial elections in South Africa, Dr. Nomaza Paintin in NZ was the first black South African to vote.

2005 | Under international pressure, Syria withdrew the last of its 14 000 troop military garrison in Lebanon and ended its 29-year military domination of that country (Syrian occupation of Lebanon).

1994 | China Airlines Flight 140 crashed at Nagoya Airport in Japan, 264 people of the 271 people on board were killed.

1989 | The deadliest known tornado struck Central Bangladesh, over 1 300 people were killed, 12 000 were injured, and left as many as 80 000 homeless.
