 2013 | Jazz musician Victor Ntoni died of a heart attack at the Helen Joseph Hospital in Johannesburg. 

2021 | A nitrogen leak at a chicken feed processing facility in Gainesville, Georgia killed six people and injured at least ten.

1982 | US Army General James L. Dozier was rescued by Italian anti-terrorist forces from captivity by the Red Brigades.

1724 | The Russian Academy of Sciences was founded in St.  Petersburg, Russia, by Peter the Great, and implemented by order of the Senate.  It was called the College of Science of St. Petersburg until 1917.

1984 | Tropical Storm Domoina made landfall in southern Mozambique, eventually killing 214 people and causing some of the worst flooding ever recorded in the region.
